You’re probably wondering how I could be both a designer and a photographer.
Well, it’s actually not all that uncommon. One of the most significant factors involved in quality photos is the composition. For web designers specifically, layout and balance are critical. While photography and design are separate, they do share some of the same artistic “rules.”
Anyways,
To make this long story short, I’m a visual designer and photographer based in Houston, Texas. Interested in learning more about my background and how I became a designer and photographer? Read on!
My Story
With only 23 years under my belt, the steady ache for adventure is deep within my bones. I’m eager to take on the challenges of life wherever I’m taken. I quickly discovered I could map out an adventurous world of infinite possibilities through my love of writing, design and photography. The rush of creating something beautiful caught hold of me… and refused to let go.
That’s the rich soil I’ve been growing in ever since.
To put simply, my name is Kaitlyn and I’m a Houston-based designer and photographer. I love helping others create a stunning online presence and photographing people’s lives in a beautiful, true and authentic way. As a designer and photographer, I’m so thankful for the career I have!
I graduated from Texas Christian University where I got to study two things I enjoyed most: journalism and art. If you were to ask me back in 2012 what my plans were after I completed college, I’d tell you that I’d be working as an on-air reporter or broadcaster for a TV news station or an editor for a major publication. Guess what, though? I ended up not doing either of those things.
I dedicated a huge chunk of my life following the wrong path, chasing the wrong dream…
I don’t resent my decision to study journalism. Not one bit. It led me to discover my true passions: design and photography. It wasn’t until my last year in college when I decided to branch out and take design classes in the art department. I took classes like visual communication, design and color theory, typography and web design. I received comments from my professors telling me that I chose the wrong major and that I should have pursued design instead of journalism. Even though I didn’t realize it initially, I quickly discovered how limited you are creatively in journalism. Those four classes changed my life.
I finally took myself down a new road, the right road…
Shortly after graduating, I decided that I wanted to become a web designer for a creative agency of sorts. To achieve this dream, I furthered my education in the field I had grown to love. By the end of 2016, I obtained a master’s in mass communication from Texas Tech University with an emphasis in advertising. While I attended grad school, I had the opportunity to gain real-life experience and work on real projects for real clients through an internship that would soon turn into a job. In this position, I was able to challenge myself as a web designer, educate myself and discover things I never thought I’d be capable of.
My mindset after completing undergrad:
I have intentions of making something of myself, something big. Right now, though, as my roots dig firmly into the earth, I’m just cruising along life’s precious ride, following the trail of my curiosities.
Our own unique paths in life are determined by our decisions and, of course, determination. My decisions have led me to a path where I am determined to live my life doing something that makes me happy… something I’m passionate about. I had always been aware of what I’m most passionate about, but I’ll admit, it took a lot of hard work to transform the idea into a reality.

My “Why”
I can’t remember a time that I wasn’t indulging in some sort of creative project. I started creating websites for my favorite celebrities when I was 12 years old and picked up my first digital camera around the same age. These passions have forever been part of who I am, but I didn’t realize that I could turn these hobbies into a career until much later in life. I get pure joy out of helping others create a stunning online presence for themselves or their brand. I get that same feeling when I’m asked to photograph someone, striving to do so in the most beautiful, true and authentic way.
What I Do
I work remotely as a web designer and developer for The Owen Group, an advertising agency based in Lubbock, Texas. Despite taking a basic web design class during my undergraduate coursework, I consider myself a self-taught web designer.
Outside of work, you can find me indulging in my other creative passions like photography. I specialize in portraits, lifestyle, family and dog photography. I strive to capture real moments that my clients will cherish forever.
